Dr. Smith
Crystal Smith, DVM: veterinarian
Dr. Smith was born in central Iowa and grew up in the Havelock area as a Staff NCO Marine’s kid. She is a 1986 graduate from Havelock High School. She is a 1990 magna cum laude graduate from NCSU with a BS in zoology, and a 1994 DVM graduate of NCSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After college she returned to work locally in private practice in the Havelock, Beaufort and Cape Carteret regions doing routine “general practice”. Dr. Smith also has two years of after-hours emergency experience at Quail Corners Animal Hospital in the Raleigh area. She then spent about 4 years traveling Eastern North Carolina doing relief vet work. Dr. S finally settled down with her true love (cats) at Coastal Cat Clinic in June of 2005. She’s been there, happy, ever since.
Professionally, her interests include traveling to Cornell’s Feline Symposiums late summers to keep up-to date on the latest continuing education (CE) from the Feline Health Center in Ithaca, NY. She also attends many of the feline-exclusive CE events around the country sponsored by the AAFP to better help our Onslow County felines. She frequently exceeds NC’s required CE standards.
When she’s not studying to improve our cats’ lives, Dr. Smith likes to walk with her husband. She plays online games (WoW) with her husband and son. She is also an official member of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club. Dressing up in her Boba Fett’esque costume with her husband to benefit charities such as Make a Wish, visiting children’s hospitals, and attending sci-fi/fantasy cons and movie openings to promote the club are a source of fun and adventure as well.
Dr. Smith is a member of:
1) AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners)
2) AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)
3) NCVMA (North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association)
Dr. Smith’s cats
Hagrid (black) and Bellatrix (tortie), adopted from Carteret Humane December 2017.
Luna and Tonks were a pair of kittens surrendered by a client that couldn’t care for them November 2021. They are now mostly “daddy’s” girls, but don’t mind sitting on mommy’s lap too.
