I am frequently asked which is the best food for their cat. It’s hard to name specific brands because every cat is different. Individual cats may have food sensitivities, etc. But generally speaking, I recommend a canned diet that doesn’t upset the cat’s skin/stomach and doesn’t break the budget. Goals to shoot for are 60% or more protein, 5% or less carbohydrates… and the cat has to want to eat it. There is a 67 page document on catinfo.org which provides this information for you. Feeding a high protein/low carb diet will usually also help a cat with weight issues and diabetes.
If you feed your cat dry food, do it for some other reason than “cleaning teeth”. Don’t do it because you think the food is cleaning the cat’s teeth. (It’s not.) Only very specific foods are designed to do that.

You can visit http://coastalcatclinic.com/links/ for specific canned foods that meet these recommendations. I’ve sorted through the 67 page document and pulled out some of the good choices and provided Amazon links if you want to check them out. Fat content is much less important that protein/carbs, and the phosphorus tab is only really important if you have a cat in kidney failure.
